When you start a food business, you automatically become part of one of the biggest industries in the world without even realizing it. And being such a huge part of the economy, there is a lot to learn from and a lot of information (and misinformation) to process. With everyone in the world progressing to become an entrepreneur, starting an online food business is one of the major choices for everyone to get behind.

Since it’s easy for everyone to start a food business as long as they have the resources to make and deliver food, and not-to-mention the most important part: know how to cook delicious meals. Your focus should be on how you intend to promote your brand and make strategies accordingly. In this blog, we discuss a few tips on how to start your food business, and what steps can make you reach the level of success you need.

Steps to Start Your Online Food Business

1. Choose Your Niche

Decide what food industry niche you want to be a part of. Whether you want to start a catering service or invest in a greek restaurant franchise or want to take your restaurant delivery service online. Identifying your niche will help you understand where you stand as a brand and who do you want to serve. Are you an affordable everyday brand or a gourmet luxury? How do you stand out to your audience (What’s your USP?)

2. Conduct Market Research

Doing your market research is highly essential especially if you are just entering in the food business rather than just extending your services online. Consider what’s the size of the segment you are entering? Who are your direct and indirect competitors? What are the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors? What’s the growth rate of the overall industry and your segment? What are the industry trends? What factors drive your customers?

3. Prepare a Business and Meal Plan

The primary motive of any business is to generate earnings. Therefore, no matter how small scale is your business, you need to create a business plan to calculate expected return and a break-even point. Along with a business plan, you must create a menu plan to keep things clear and defined.

4. Brand Logo, Packaging and Labeling

Ecommerce has enabled many small entrepreneurs to enter the food business. Click for best customs broker service here. But as much as E-Commerce has facilitated the food industry, it poses some challenges too as the sense and taste can’t be assessed online which are the deciding factors. Therefore, branding plays a critical role in the food business to make your audience imagine the look, feel and taste of your product. All the branding elements from packaging, logo, labelling to photography all need to contribute towards communicating your brand story.

5. Determine Product Prices and Logistics

Under or over-valuing your product prices can tank your food business in the long-term so getting the right price is essential for your success. To calculate the final price you need to factor in the variable cost, fixed cost, and profit margin. Another most important thing is analyzing your logistic options and cost. This needs deciding whether you want to include the delivery cost in your offering price or not.

6. Create Buyer Personas

One of the biggest mistakes you can make as an online startup is trying to reach and appeal to everyone. Select the target market you want to serve and who will be interested in buying your product from a larger segment of the market. This needs creating a buyer persona based on demographic, geographic, behavioural and psychographic factors. Not going much into detail of each factor, here’s an example to help you. For example, if you are a home-based food business offering healthy meals on lunch timings then office going individuals who are focused on health and physical wellness will be your target audience.

7. Create Your Online Store

Time to put your idea and all the planning into action. There are different options that you can choose from or use a combination of all. You can select an online marketplace such as Foodpanda, Careem or Uber Eats, create your own eCommerce website, or start selling your product directly from any social media site such as Facebook (most preferred due to the large pool of audience) or Instagram. To sell products from Facebook only, you need to add products from setting or add your menu. Also, make sure to provide a contact number to take orders.

8. Start Marketing According to Set Strategy

To get the right level of attention, reach and leads on online platforms you need to have an effective marketing strategy that aligns with your overall goals and objectives. Be clear about your objective: do you want to increase reach and increase awareness about your brand through online presence? Or do you want to generate leads/orders? If you are short on budget then try to focus on the most important objective to you. Your content strategy and social media ads should align with your marketing objective.

9. Keep Tracking Analytics

Most people think that their work ends after creating a marketing strategy and setting up ads which are actually another common mistake committed by brands. You need to keep track of the results generated and your website analytics so that you can tweak your marketing strategy according to your audience preference and changing industry trends. Look what customers are saying about you? Which campaign is yielding the best result for you. Doing this will give you an edge over your competitor and enable you to plan for the future accordingly.

To conclude, never jump into any business without proper planning. All these will not only help you to take your food business online but will help you create a lasting customer relationship with your audience which is a secret to successful businesses.
